ISO/ASTM 52942:2020 establishes qualification principles for operators of laser metal powder bed fusion (L-PBF) machines used in aerospace additive manufacturing. - Machine model: qualification is specific to the machine manufacturer and model tested.

- Certificates must list name/identifier, machine model(s), material group(s), trained advanced skills, vision limitations, issue and expiry dates, and examiner signature. A sample format is in Annex C.
- Validity: certificates are valid for 2 years. Requalification is required if inactive >6 months on the qualified machine, if performance concerns arise, or at expiry.
- Supplementary testing: used to add machine models, materials or skills without changing the original certificate validity.
