ISO 1496-1:2013 specifies the basic specifications and testing requirements for ISO series 1 freight containers of the totally enclosed general purpose types and certain specific purpose types (closed, vented, ventilated or open top) which are suitable for international exchange and for conveyance by road, rail and sea, including interchange between these forms of transport.

Abstract

Overview

ISO 1496-1:2013 defines the specifications and test requirements for Series 1 general purpose freight containers used for international exchange and intermodal transport (road, rail and sea). It covers totally enclosed general-purpose containers and certain specific-purpose variants (closed, vented/ventilated and open-top) and sets out the required dimensions, ratings, design features and mandatory performance tests to ensure safe interchange and conveyance.

- Structural integrity for corner fittings, base, ends, sides, roof and floor.
- Corner fittings per ISO 1161; top corner fittings must protrude at least 6 mm above the container top.

- Secure fastening for doors and removable roofs; weatherproofness for closed and covered containers.
Testing regime (Clause 6): A set of 13 defined tests for container performance:

- Test No.3 - Lifting from four bottom corner fittings
- Test No.4 - Restraint (longitudinal)
- Test No.5 - Strength of end walls
- Test No.6 - Strength of side walls
- Test No.7 - Strength of the roof
- Test No.8 - Floor strength
- Test No.9 - Rigidity (transverse)
- Test No.10 - Rigidity (longitudinal)
- Test No.11 - Lifting from forklift pockets (where fitted)
- Test No.12 - Shoring slots (where fitted)
- Test No.13 - Weatherproofness
Normative annexes: Diagrammatic strength capabilities (Annex A), fork-lift pocket dimensions (Annex B), cargo securing systems (Annex C), and shoring slot system (Annex D).
