This document specifies a test method by artificial perspiration solution aqueous extraction for the determination of the aqueous extractable content of the following preservative agents in leather by liquid chromatography: — 2-(thiocyanomethylthio)-benzothiazole (TCMTB); — 4-chloro-3-methylphenol (PCMC); — 2-phenylphenol (OPP); — 2-octylisothiazol-3(2H)-one (OIT); This method can also be used to determine breakdown products of these preservative agents, which protect leather from microbiological attack.

Overview

ISO 13365-2:2020 specifies an artificial perspiration extraction method for determining the aqueous-extractable content of leather preservatives - TCMTB, PCMC, OPP, and OIT - by liquid chromatography (HPLC/LC‑MS). The procedure assesses the portion of preservative agents that can be released from leather under simulated perspiration conditions, helping evaluate potential user exposure and product safety.

Apparatus and reagents: Reversed-phase C8/C18 columns, HPLC or LC‑MS systems, specified reagent grades (HPLC/LC‑MS grade solvents, reference standards ≥97–99.7 %), membrane filters and controlled water quality (ISO 3696).
