IEC 61300-2-9: 2017 defines a test method to reveal mechanical weakness and/or degradation of fibre optic devices when subjected to repetitive or non-repetitive mechanical shocks. It simulates infrequent repetitive or non-repetitive shocks likely to be encountered in normal service or during transportation. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2010. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - inserted clause "Terms and definitions"; - added precise descriptions to clause "Apparatus"; - added sub clause "Testing" into clause "Procedure"; - added "Bibliography".

Abstract

Overview

IEC 61300-2-9:2017 specifies a standardized shock test method for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. The standard defines how to expose a device under test (DUT) to repetitive or non‑repetitive mechanical shocks-simulating infrequent shocks encountered in normal service or during transportation-to reveal mechanical weakness or degradation. This third edition is a technical revision that adds terms and definitions, more precise apparatus descriptions, a testing sub‑clause in the procedure, and a bibliography.

Velocity change: Actual velocity change must be within ±15% of the nominal value. When integrated from acceleration, the integration window is from 0.4 D before the pulse to 0.1 D after the pulse (D = nominal pulse duration).
Cross‑axis motion: The standard limits unintended acceleration perpendicular to the intended shock direction (see clause 5.1.4 for tolerance requirements).
Procedure steps: Preparation of DUT, pre‑conditioning, initial examinations and measurements, testing, recovery, and final examinations (visual and optical-transient loss and power measurements).
Shock severity: Defined as the combined effect of peak acceleration, pulse duration, and number of shocks.
